Jenna Marie Blofield

Hello...

As a future teacher there are certain aspects in both the classroom environment and teaching and learning phase that I would like to develop and be confident in. There is still a lot more to learn but I feel that because of my experience in the classroom I have a great foundation in this growth plan to be successful in a career of education.

Reflection on my previous Teaching Philosphy

I still do believe that in terms of the classroom environment, I would like to create a space of respect filled with learners that I hold a healthy relationship with. These learners should feel safe and open with their individuality. This is one of my great strengths, I find I have an assertive, gentle, and caring nature. Establishing a culture for learning in the classroom is sometimes difficult, I want to encourage active learning, where learners have a sense of control. Being experimental and learning through discovery makes the learning process fun but also social. Using collaboration will create this culture inside the classroom where learners encourage learning to others. I feel that through my experience in the Grade 3 classroom and working in a school for a year I have found many ways of doing this, learning from other teachers, experimenting to see what works and what doesn’t and learning the way in which learners learn best.

Classroom procedures can be managed by being organized if no procedures are in place the classroom will not run effectively. I do find this is one of my strengths because I like to visually plan. This links closely with organizing the classroom space, I want to be proud of my classroom and I have already started collecting resources to make it resource rich. I find that because of working with great mentors at school I have grown tremendously in managing student behavior before I found that I was too soft on a child and for that reason they feel they can do whatever they want. Instead, now I find that setting the boundaries and rules in my classroom, using different management strategies and other techniques has allowed me to be firm but approachable. The learners feel safe, but understand what behaviour is acceptable in my classroom.

Communicating with the students is a major aspect of teaching and learning, I find I am a very patient person with children, approachable and I am willing to communicate two or three times again with a child if they don’t understand. I have learnt many teaching strategies and techniques from both my experience and social media as well, I am always looking for new strategies to prepare myself for learners with different learning styles. I find one of my biggest strengths is engaging students with learning, I always try to make learning fun and exciting. I want to create a love for learning, to do this, I need to be a good role model for the learners. This approach has only strengthened by learning from personal experiences and from other teachers in the classroom. It is hard when the teachers in the classroom communicate in a different way, this through this experience I have only grown. Learning different ways of doing things, some I will take on myself in my classroom and some I will use as a learning opportunity.

With my experience as an intern, I have been involved in the processes of creating, marking and moderating assessment papers. I still do find that a lot of the assessments are not inclusive, I understand their importance and the purpose of standardized testing, but I want to challenge myself to find other ways of assessing when doing formal assessments. This is something I really want to work on, challenge myself to better the assessment system. The experience I’ve had I feel has prepared me for diversity, flexibility, and the necessary tools to overcome obstacles and challenges. I don’t feel scared about having my own classroom, I am excited to get in the classroom, use all that I’ve learnt and learn more as I progress.

Assumptions and Beliefs

I find that being in the Foundation Phase of teaching, it is such an important and vital time of a child’s life. This valuable time should be used to its full potential and not wasted. Every child deserves to be taught in a way that they understand, whether this be in different forms of instruction, language, visual, auditory etc. I feel that teaching is a team effort, each party in the learning process should be included and giving their best. This is the teacher, the environment, the learner, parents, the resources etc. Learning cannot happen when all involved are not giving of their best, this then also proves the point of treat one as you would want to be treated. If myself as a teacher does not give of my best, then how can I expect the same from my learners. The learning process is a team effort and many roles are played to reach success. I want to be a figure in the classroom that is not only authoritarian, I want the learners to be involved in the learning process, find ways that work for them, if a particular way works for one it could be a different way but this should be encouraged. Also, the teacher is not the sole source of learning, learners can learn from multiple different peers in the classroom. Learners can learn from the teacher, other learners, through experience, parents, members of the community etc. The learning process is not set and stone, but more subjective to many varieties. And lastly, I feel that the process of reflection is vitally important and should be included as a daily activity as a teacher. Reflection allows for self-improvement, awareness, adaptability, strengthens classroom management, promotes student learning and improves the student-teacher relationships in the classroom creating an inclusive and supportive classroom culture.

Teaching Philosophy

My teaching philosophy is to create an inclusive environment where all learners unique needs are met with a stimulating learning environment. All learners should have the best possible chance of grow and success mentally, physically and emotionally. The atmosphere in my classroom should allow the learners to be equipped in such a way that they can reach their full potential. My beliefs are that everyone should be kind towards one another, respect the materials and people inside and outside the classroom and that each person in the classroom is entitled to their own beliefs and opinions, everyone does not have to agree with one another but we still need to be respectful of others opinions. My goal is to create a resource rich environment where learners have all the tools necessary to learn effectively. I want to use my environment to inspire active learning, create a safe space where learners’ feel supported and have a strong foundation in respect. This is my most important value, respect. Respect needs to be earned, and this is going to be the foundation of my classroom. All is welcome in the classroom when there is respect, we respect each other, their ideas and their thoughts, we respect out resources, materials and classroom as an entirety. I want to be forward thinking, supportive, creative, authentic and promote this attitude in my classroom.
